ACTIVITIES 2018

Social Program

1. “Road Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility.”
The activity was attended by approximately 70 pupils from the Lalas Primary School of the Municipality of Ancient Olympia.
It included a shadow theatre performance entitled “Karagiozis and Mr. Highway Code” by shadow puppeteer Christos Plessas, as well as the screening of the video “Learning How to Use the Road” (by the former Head of the Kaisariani Traffic Police, G. Pantazopoulos).
After attentively following the entire event, the young students asked questions to the Head of the Pyrgos Traffic Police, Mrs. Bogle, and shared their own observations about what happens when they are on the road, in a car, or on a bicycle. They also expressed criticism regarding the road behaviour of both their parents and other drivers. The children were reminded that traffic police officers stand alongside both pedestrians and drivers, advising and assisting them in order to prevent road accidents.

2. TOY LIBRARY.
In cooperation with Politeia of Ilida Olympia, toys and books were donated for the creation of a toy library at the Municipal Building of the Local Community of Lalas.

3. CLOTHING BANK.
A children’s clothing bank was created in the Local Community of Lalas, Municipality of Ancient Olympia, with the aim—together with the “Help at Home” program—of supporting fellow citizens in need.

4. The Federation of Olympia, honoring World Environment Day, within the framework of its social program and believing that everything can be useful and recyclable, delivered plastic bottle caps collected from water and juice consumed by runners during the Route of Truce 2018 to Giorgos Karamanis, Deputy Chief of the Pyrgos Scouts System.
The Scouts of Pyrgos collect the caps at their premises and subsequently deliver them to the Association of Paraplegics and Persons with Motor Disabilities of the Regional Unit of Ilia.

The bottle caps were delivered by members of the Federation of Olympia, Sofia Hintziou Kontogianni and Konstantinos Kontogiannis.

Ms. Kontogianni had previously contacted Giorgos Papanikolopoulos to inform him about the initiative. Mr. Papanikolopoulos thanked the organization for its support to their Association, which has long been collecting bottle caps for the purchase of wheelchairs for people in need, and promised that during the next Route of Truce in 2019 even more actions would take place to support their Association.

Konstantinos Kontogiannis, as a member of the Federation of Olympia and as Head of the 1st Scout System of Ilioupoli, congratulated Mr. Karamanis both for their valuable assistance during the Route of Truce and for their continuous efforts in supporting fellow citizens in need. It is noted that the Route of Truce 2018 was also held under the auspices of the Hellenic Scouts.

In the coming days, the Federation of Olympia, in cooperation with Politeia of Ilida Olympia, will create a new toy library and a children’s clothing bank (using toys and clothes no longer in use by children) in yet another village of Ilia.

It is noted that to date, 20 toy libraries and 3 clothing banks for children have already been created.

The Route of Truce 2018 took place on Sunday, April 22.
