For the 11th consecutive year, Sympoliteia Olympia is organizing the “Route of Truce 2026”, a unique walk of symbolism and unity, on Sunday, 26 April 2026, on the Sacred Land between Ancient Ilida and Ancient Olympia. Registrations are open at routeoftruce.com and participation is free for all activities.
The route and the message
Where athletes once laid down their weapons to compete; where each person, upon arriving to take part in the noble contest—having completed their own personal Route of Truce from their homeland to Ilida—would surrender their arms and continue unarmed, joining the spirit of fair and honorable competition and sending a powerful message: it was there that the Truce was born as a prerequisite for participation in the Games.
A message not only for the world as it was then known, but one that travels through history and reaches our days more relevant than ever: the message of the Truce—the Truce that leads to peace!
Along the “Route of Truce” (50 kilometers), participants symbolically connect the host city of the ancient Olympic Games, Ilida, with the place where the Games were held, Olympia, in a non-competitive walk in which everyone moves together, following the lead runner.
The start will be given at 05:45 a.m. in front of the Theatre of Ilida, with the finish in Ancient Olympia, at the square of the old Town Hall. The route passes through 13 villages of semi-mountainous Ilia: Dafni, Keramidia, Dafniotissa, Peristeri, Cheimadio, Sopi, Karatoula, Magoula, Latzoi, Pournari, Pelopio, Platano.
Along the way, the participants—messengers of the Truce—experience the hospitality of Zeus Xenios through the joyful faces of the people, a tradition that comes from the depths of the centuries and reaches our days, bridging the ancient with the modern.
Today’s residents, descendants of the ancient Eleans, welcome the walkers with fresh water and traditional products—fruit, raisins, dairy products, juices, nuts… gifts of the land of Ilia, generously offered to the modern messengers of the Truce. Approximately every 5 km there will be supply stations, while throughout the entire route volunteers and members of the Hellenic Red Cross accompany the participants.
The symbolism
This walk bridges the ancient with the modern, highlighting the Olympic Values, the true meaning of the Olympic Games, and respect for the Olympic value of the Truce, which was a prerequisite for participation in the ancient Games. The participants are today’s messengers of the Truce, carrying—through their steps—the timeless message of unity and reconciliation.
